Throughout the five days, the instructor will assess you continuously, in accordance with the RYA Day Skipper practical standards. The assessment focuses on your ability to manoeuvre and safely operate the sailing boat, your knowledge of navigation and seamanship, and how you manage and coordinate the crew.

There is no separate final exam – assessment takes place throughout the course. If you meet the required standards, you will receive the RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate.

If the instructor considers that you have not yet reached the Day Skipper level, but you have met the requirements for RYA Competent Crew, you will be able to receive this certification at the end of the course.

how does it work

A RYA Day Skipper course is a great way to learn the basics of sailing.

INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the UK's national body for all forms of sailing. The RYA system is widely regarded as the world leader in international maritime qualifications and is recognised everywhere.

ZERO TO HERO

This 5-day course introduces you to the basics of sailing and teaches personal safety, as well as the basic techniques of handling and steering an agreement boat, to the level required to be a useful crew member. No age limit.

EVERYTHING IS PRACTICAL

The entire RYA Day Skipper course is hands-on and takes place on the boat, as does the exam. From the first hour you will get on the boat with the instructor and every command and manoeuvre will be explained through practice in real traffic and marine situations.

PRACTICAL SAILING COURSES

SKIPPER FOR 5 DAYS

Over the course of the five-day course, you will learn about the navigation, techniques and handling practices for recreational craft, to the standard required to sail a yacht, primarily during daylight hours and in non-tidal waters.

The RYA Day Skipper course will show you the difference between being a crew member and a recreational boat skipper.

For this course, the RYA recommends that you have a basic knowledge of sailing and approximately 5 days’ experience on board a sailing boat, 100 nautical miles and 4 hours of night sailing, as well as theoretical and navigational knowledge at Day Skipper Shore-based level. Competent Crew certification is not compulsory.

The minimum age for obtaining the RYA Day Skipper certificate is 16.

PRACTICAL SAILING COURSES

RYA COASTAL

Do you have more than 15 days on the water, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles of sailing and 8 hours of night sailing? Then the RYA Coastal certificate is the right one for you!

Don’t have the necessary experience yet? We look forward to seeing you at HOP or HOPA, the intensive practical training weeks that make all the difference!

The aim of this course is to teach the skills and techniques needed to safely operate a yacht on coastal routes, both day and night.

The RYA Coastal course builds on the Day Skipper qualification, whilst also covering the skills required for navigating in coastal waters and sailing at night.

The minimum age for certification is 17.

There is no separate final exam to complete the practical course. Assessment takes place throughout the course, and if you meet the required standards, you will receive the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical certificate.

RYA YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE SAILING INSTRUCTOR

I have been sailing for over 40 years, the last 25 years for professional purposes. I am a certified Yachtmaster Offshore sailing instructor. My diploma was issued by the Royal Yachting Academy (RYA), for boats up to 200 tons. Every year I sail over 5000 nautical miles, as a sailing instructor, in races or as a skipper on chartered sailboats. I have sailed at all levels in most Mediterranean countries and in the UK. In 2002, I crossed the Atlantic Ocean as a participant in the famous ARC race, aboard Aegeas, one of my oldest boats, a Sun Fizz 40. The starting point of this race is in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and ends after about 3000 miles in Santa Lucia, an island in the Lesser Antilles archipelago, on the open shores of Venezuela.

Since I was seven years old, I have participated in dinghy races, winning numerous national awards. I am a graduate of the sailing department of the School of Physical Education and Sport Sciences. After graduation and for the past five years, I have worked as a skipper and sailing instructor for national level certifications.
After gaining the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification in 2015, I took things to the next level by completing courses and gaining RYA Cruising Instructor certification in Southampton, UK.

I'm Andu, I've been sailing since 2013 and I've experienced sailing exactly the way most of our learners experience it: with friends on board, with flotillas, with days of changing plans, weather and crew energy. I'm a certified RYA Cruising Instructor in the UK and co-founded CAPETAN and Sail Armada out of a desire to raise the standard of the charter skipper with clear, practical and easy to apply methods.

In training, I care about two things: understanding the “why” behind the decisions, and practising enough to come naturally. My greatest satisfaction as an instructor is watching you take the boat without hesitation and become skipper for your friends or family.

Hi, I’m Andrei; people call me Perju, but you can actually call me whatever you like, as long as I reply :).

I’ve been fascinated by sailing since 2010, and the whole history of Capetan and Sail Armada really speaks to me. I’ve been in charge of training since 2006 and I work according to a simple principle: if you know it well, great; if you don’t, I’ll help you learn.

I’m calm – too calm at times – I joke – too much at times – I explain – too much at times … just as the wind blows – too strongly at times. I’m always ready with a word and open to any challenge.

My name is Giorgos and I started sailing quite by chance.

From the very first time the boat heeled over, I knew this was something I wanted to do. Since then, sailing has become an important part of my life and I enjoy every aspect of it – from relaxing days at sea and swimming with friends, to sailing with charter guests and races in different corners of the world.

But above all, I love sharing my passion for sailing with others, helping people to learn, gain confidence and discover the freedom and joy of being on the water.

With around 15 years’ experience at sea, I’ve been lucky enough to sail in the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean and the waters around the UK, and I still enjoy every mile! I’m an RYA Cruising Instructor, a skipper and, above all, someone who loves being on the water.

I work as an RYA instructor and skipper on charter cruises and yacht deliveries in the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean. My experience also includes offshore racing, fleet racing and match racing, which have taught me to stay calm, make good decisions, work as part of a crew and adapt to whatever the sea throws at us!

As an instructor, I enjoy helping sailors build their confidence, become more independent and have fun whilst they’re learning. For me, sailing is about much more than just performing manoeuvres correctly – it’s about understanding the boat, reading the conditions, developing a true sailor’s mindset and enjoying the journey.

He is passionate about turning sailors into confident skippers who understand not just how to manoeuvre a boat, but how to think at sea. Whether training, crossing or cruising, Dan always creates a calm, friendly and professional environment on board.
Sailing with it means clarity, confidence and the joy of being on the water, just as it should be.

After finalising my certifications in the UK, I clocked up my miles as an instructor over many seasons teaching new sailors.
